Background
If you love hiking or appreciating the scenery that Mother Nature has to offer, then the Tree Top Walk is the place for you to visit during your free time. Located at Mac Ritchie, Singapore’s first ever aerial walkway is a free standing suspension bridge spanning between the 2 highest points, Bukit Peirce and Bukit Kalang.
Officially launched on 5th November 2004, the structure measuring 250m long and 25m tall offers visitors a bird’s eye view of the Upper Pierce Reservoir. To ensure that communities of plants and animals living in the forest are not affected by the construction process, the location for the trail was carefully selected.
Other than providing recreational activities, HSBC TTW also facilitates in forest canopy research and assists the progress of surveys conducted and plant identification works to further our understandings on how the forest ecosystems work.
Due its presence, researchers are now able to research on areas that are above the ground. In addition the HSBC Tree Top Walk is often used as an outdoor classroom for workshops and programs conducted for students and teachers. It also encourages people to be more active and involved in conservation activities.
Your experience
Being on the suspension bridge, you no longer have to arch your necks to observe the canopy and instead, will be able to catch a closer glimpse of the various flora and fauna at eye level. You may also spot different species of birds in the forest; Colugos (flying lemurs) and Long-tailed macaques (monkeys); and enjoy a breathtaking view of Upper Peirce Reservoir and lush green forest.
In the first section of the walk, you will pass by a stream and the Singapore Island Country Club. Drinking water and toilets are available about at the Rangers Station after about 4km into the walk. Spanning a total of 8 hours, the walk is filled with uneven terrain and will consume up to 3 hours of walking time at a normal walking pace.
