Singapore Zoological Gardens

                                              Background of Singapore Zoo
The Singapore Zoological gardens is a nature based attraction that started in June 1973, covering a land area of 28 hectares. Set in a rainforest environment, the Singapore Zoo’s world famous ‘open concept’ offers the opportunity to experience and be inspired by the wonders of nature. Animals here live in big open spaces and landscaped environments similar to that of their natural habitat so that the animals do not lose their natural animal instincts.

The Singapore Zoo is taking this further by evolving into an Open, Learning Zoo. Instead of just observing the animals, educational content designed in an interactive mode is a feature of all exhibits. This way, schools are able to organize educational field trips with the zoo for their students. Everyone will have an enjoyable and enriching learning experience.

The Singapore Zoo is home to over 2,500 specimens from 315 species, 29% of which are threatened; our Zoo is internationally recognized for its efforts in saving the animals and breeding programmes.

The Singapore Zoo has won numerous awards. Some of which are by Forbes traveler.com who awarded our zoo as ‘One of the world’s best zoos’ in 2007. At the STB 22nd tourism awards, it was awarded the ‘Best Leisure Attraction Experience of the Year’. Also, viator.com gave the award ‘Top 5 Most Popular Family Experiences’ to our zoo. Being an award winning zoo, it is definitely worth a trip.

One of the attractions you will visit is the Australian outback where you can fully experience the natural wildlife of Australia wiithout having to even fly there. Grey kangaroos and agile wallabies skip about freely as you enter the walk-through area of the exhibit that reflects the rugged beauty of Down Under. Guests can even experience up close encounters with the kangaroos during the twice-daily feeding sessions, where you will have these dandy marsupials literally munching out of your hand! One key highlight is the frill-necked lizard, which shares a home with the bearded dragon. Marvel at the intricate patterns of the carpet python and catch a glimpse of the shy sugar gliders as they huddle up in a group, happy for a snooze. These lizards are proof that preserving endangered animals is still a practice in the Singapore zoo.

Moving on to the east side of the zoo, you will be able to interact with many different African animals. You can visit the reptile garden which houses many different species of reptiles. One of which is the Komodo dragon. Reptiles’ lovers can also visit the snake house if they wish to see the snakes up close or even take pictures with it. Other attractions include Sungei Buaya, fragile forest, cat country and Primate Kingdom.

Children are not neglected when they visit the zoo as there is an area specially for them. Here, they can ride ponies and horse carriages and can even watch the animal friends show. There is also a mini water park for kids to soak and play in under the hot sun.
The zoo participates in conservation efforts to preserve wildlife as many of the species in the world are already endangered.
